1. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion is widely regard as one of the most innovative anime series of all time. And you can see it for yourself if you have Netflix! Many individuals claim Neon Genesis Evangelion to have a riveting story and memorable characters. It’s also full of symbolism and metaphors and overall is an interesting psychological character study.

2. Dragon Ball Z

Dragon Ball Z was and still is pure, pound-for-pound fun. Growing up and watching Goku duke it out with Frieza during late-night Toonami were some of the many highlights growing up. Its over-top action sequences and dialogue and lovable characters made Dragon Ball Z a thrill to watch. And for many people, DBZ even became the gateway anime into discovering more series.

3. Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon is the quintessential magical girl anime. The show follows Usagi Tsukino and after talking to Luna, a magical talking cat, Usagi gains ability to transform into her magical alter ego: Sailor Moon. While being incredibly influential, this 90s anime does contain a lot of “filler.” Additionally, Sailor Moon has garnered mixed reviews from those that have grown up with the show and gave it a second viewing. Even with that said, Sailor Moon is forever a classic and a staple of 90s anime.

4. Yu Yu Hakasho

Equipped with nearly zero fillers, a distinct yet vintage art-style, and an actually great dub, Yu Yu Hakasho is a an all-round amazing show. Following the likes of Yusuke Urameshi, he is a teenage delinquent who is struck and killed by a car while attempting to save a child’s life. On the surface, Yu Yu Hakasho appears to be your typical run-of-the-mill shounen. However, this show is so much more. It’s incredibly nuanced and compelling throughout. The good guys aren’t entirely pure and just. Additionally, the villains are complex and multi-faceted. Altogether, this leads to very engaging storylines.

5. Cowboy Bebop

Great stories, characters, and music. This is Cowboy Bebop in a nutshell. The bebop crew, which consists of Jet, Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine, Edward, and Ein, explores their standalone adventures throughout the galaxy. Cowboy Bebop’s episodes are largely self-contained storylines. If you’re the type to appreciate an episode for what it is as well as be fine with where it takes you, this classic show is perfect for you.
